If you’re a singer, you’ve probably heard the term mixed voice before and know it’s important, but have you ever wondered what it actually means? Many singers have trouble identifying and utilizing mixed voice, which can lead to common problems like a lack of power and control in their upper range, a break or flip in their voice when transitioning between registers, and difficulty singing in a natural and relaxed manner.

What Is Mixed Voice?

Mixed voice is a blend of chest voice and head voice. Chest voice is the lower register of your vocal range, and it’s often used for singing lower notes. Head voice, on the other hand, is what you use when you sing higher pitches—like those found in opera or musical theater repertoire. When your chest and head voices are blending together at the same time, that’s called mixed voice!

Why do we need to use Mixed Voice?

To put it simply, mixed voice allows your voice to remain powerful as you transition beyond chest voice without strain. Mixed voice is like a bridge between the lower and higher registers of singing, allowing you to have an extended range of notes that can be sung in a healthy way.

How Do I Reach It?

It’s much easier to reach mixed voice if you know what it feels like. The following are two vocal exercises we teach in our courses that will allow you to experience the feeling of mixed voice while you’re honing your skills:

  • 1.5 octave lip trills and 1.5 octave bratty nay exercises: This is one of my favorite scales for practicing mixed voice as we go up and back down so quickly that its helps us naturally bypass the desire to grab or stretch for the notes while untrained.

Mixed voice will help you sing with more freedom and ease.

Discovering your mixed voice will help you sing with more freedom and ease. It will give you the ability to stay connected through the entire range of your voice which means that you can sound amazing no matter what note your singing.
